Description

Starfield Optics 2" Herschel Solar Wedge — White-Light Solar Observing for Refractors

The Starfield Optics 2" Herschel Solar Wedge transforms how you observe the Sun’s surface in white light, revealing high-contrast detail including sunspots and surface texture. It replaces your standard 2" mirror or prism diagonal on a compatible refractor, and the built-in brightness controls make it exceptionally convenient for both visual observing and solar imaging.

Why a wedge? Compared to traditional film solar filters, solar wedges are well known for producing a higher-contrast image by reducing reflections between the filter and the telescope lens.

Key Features

  • 2" format for larger refractors and wider light path
  • Imaging-ready brightness control: fine-tune brightness without removing your camera
  • Adjustable polarizing system: brightness is adjusted by rotating the 2" eyepiece holder
  • Built-in ND3 filter for safe attenuation (do not remove)
  • Large clear aperture: 46mm
  • Includes 2" to 1.25" adapter for flexible eyepiece/camera configurations

Compatibility

  • Telescope type: refractors only
  • Recommended aperture: up to 150mm (about 6")
  • Connection: replaces a standard 2" diagonal on your focuser

If you have a smaller refractor: For refractors up to about 100mm, see the Starfield 1.25" Solar Wedge.

Back Focus (Important for Reaching Focus)

The wedge adds approximately 115mm of back focus (measured to the top of the 2" turret). This is useful to know if you are close to the end of your focuser travel or if you are configuring a camera train.

Safety & Important Information (Read Before Use)

  1. Refractors only. Do not use with reflector-style telescopes, SCTs, or Maksutovs.
  2. Remove or cover non-solar finders. Remove any finder/guide scope not designed for solar use before aiming at the Sun.
  3. Never remove the built-in filter. Before each use, confirm it is securely mounted and in place.
  4. Never place filters on the input/front side. Heat can crack or damage filters and coatings. Filters are only safe on the output side.
  5. Never leave the system unattended. Solar observing is hazardous and requires responsible handling.

FAQ

What does a Herschel wedge show?

A Herschel wedge is designed for white-light solar observing and imaging with refractors, delivering high-contrast views of the solar photosphere (including sunspots and surface texture).

Can I use this on an SCT, Mak, or Newtonian?

No. A Herschel wedge is for refractors only.

Can I add filters?

Yes, but only on the output side (after the light has passed through the prism). Never place filters on the input side.

Will it reach focus on my refractor?

The wedge adds approximately 115mm of back focus. If you have questions about focus travel, contact us with your telescope model.
